LP mourns CJN Uwais, urges electoral reform report action.

Abuja, NigeriaThe Labour Party (LP) has expressed profound sadness over the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Mohammed Uwais, describing him as “a shining beacon of integrity” and a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s legal history.

In a condolence message signed by the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party lauded the late jurist Natasha’s Recall ‘ll Deepen Democracy Groupfor his principled leadership and lasting impact on Nigeria’s judiciary and democratic evolution.

“Justice Uwais’ legacy is deeply engraved in the history of our nation’s legal system. His visionary and principled stewardship as Chief Justice not only advanced justice but set a high standard for future generations of legal practitioners,” the statement noted.

Justice Uwais served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006 and chaired the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee established by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. This committee produced the influential ‘Uwais Report’ on electoral reforms.

The Labour Party seized the occasion of his passing to urge policymakers to urgently implement the report’s key recommendations, which call for comprehensive reforms including the independence of the electoral commission and the prosecution of electoral offenses.

 

“This moment should inspire our leaders to honour Justice Uwais’ memory by swiftly enacting the electoral reforms outlined in the Mohammed Uwais Report — a testament to his dedication to democratic progress and national development,” Senator Usman said.

 

The party described his death as a monumental loss to his family, the legal community, and Nigeria at large.

 

“His passing is a great loss not only to his loved ones and the judiciary but to the entire nation he served with unwavering commitment and dignity,” the statement added.

On behalf of the Labour Party, Senator Usman prayed for the late jurist, asking Almighty Allah to grant him eternal peace and provide comfort to his family.

“May Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and console those he leaves behind,” she concluded.
