Livestock Reform Committee Engages Bauchi Stakeholders

The Presidential Livestock Reform Implementation Committee has convened discussions with stakeholders in Bauchi State to address longstanding challenges in the country’s livestock sector.

The 25-member committee, co-chaired by Professor Attahiru Jega, aims to find sustainable solutions to farmer-herder conflicts, seasonal migrations, and inefficiencies in livestock production and processing. Speaking at the session held at the Banquet Hall of the Bauchi Government House, Professor Jega underscored the committee’s focus on ensuring food and nutrition security through innovative reforms.

Jega highlighted the importance of leveraging local expertise in the agriculture and livestock value chain, urging for modernized systems to boost productivity and long-term sustainability. One key recommendation was the creation of a similar committee within Bauchi State and the establishment of a Ministry of Livestock Development to align with federal reforms.

Governor Bala Mohammed, who led the Bauchi delegation, described the discussions as a significant step in addressing years of neglect in the sector. He emphasized that the proposed ministry would help mitigate seasonal migrations of herders, reduce conflicts, and promote harmony between farming and pastoral communities.

Stakeholders at the event cited successful livestock reform initiatives in other regions, showcasing how strategic interventions could transform challenges into opportunities for growth and development.
