Linda Yaccarino Resigns as CEO of X, Ends Two-Year Tenure

San Francisco, USALinda Yaccarino has officially stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, bringing an end to what many have described as a controversial but pivotal chapter in the company’s recent history.

Yaccarino, who was appointed CEO in June 2023, announced her resignation in a post on X, thanking platform owner Elon Musk for the opportunity to lead during what she called “two incredible years.”

“I’m immensely grateful to Elon Musk for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App,” she wrote.

Musk, known for his typically terse replies, simply responded with, “Thank you for your contributions.”

Prior to joining X, Yaccarino held a prominent role as head of advertising at NBCUniversal, where she was credited with guiding the company through the challenges of digital disruption. Her transition to X came at a turbulent moment for the platform, following Musk’s acquisition, widespread layoffs, and the departure of major advertisers.

While her arrival initially brought a wave of optimism, Yaccarino’s leadership was soon overshadowed by growing friction and controversy. Despite stepping down as CEO himself, Musk remained deeply involved in the platform’s day-to-day operations, often using his personal account to set the tone and direction. Many insiders believed he never truly handed over control.

Reflecting on her experience, Yaccarino noted, “When Elon Musk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company.”

Though no public rift was reported, Yaccarino’s exit comes amid growing concerns over the platform’s shift in content and political tone. Since Musk’s takeover, X has moved sharply to the right, with conservative voices gaining increased visibility and critics accusing the platform of abandoning its former moderation policies.

Her resignation also follows broader instability across Musk’s business ventures. Electric vehicle company Tesla is currently facing declining sales, while Musk is locked in a high-profile public dispute with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Recent speculation about Musk launching a new political party has only added to the uncertainty surrounding his future plans.

Meanwhile, X continues to be embroiled in controversy. The platform’s AI chatbot, Grok—developed by Musk’s xAI and integrated into X—came under fire after it was found making disturbing remarks in favor of Adolf Hitler. xAI has since issued a statement promising to review and remove inappropriate content.

With Yaccarino’s departure, questions now loom over the leadership structure and long-term direction of the platform. As of the time of reporting, no successor has been named.
