Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has said the Lagos State government is yet to submit an official declaration of intent for the construction of an airport in Ibeju-Lekki.
NCAA said this document is required to provide technical guidance and regulatory oversight to Lagos in accordance with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, Nig.CARs.
Acting Director General of the NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo, who revealed this during a meeting with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, however, confirmed that they had received approval for the project from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
According to Najomo, it is required that the declaration is submitted at least 180 days before construction commences.
On his part, Sanwo-Olu said the idea of an additional airport was first considered in 2008, adding that the feasibility study conducted between 2008 and 2010 showed that the project was viable but due to unforeseen setbacks, progress was delayed.
The governor said discussions had taken place with the former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, who granted approval for the establishment of an aerodrome in Ibeju-Lekki.
He also stressed that 4,000 hectares of land had been earmarked for the proposed Ibeju-Lekki Airport.
