Ibadan – The family of Chief Anike Agbaje-Williams, Nigeria’s first female newscaster and television broadcaster, has announced her passing at the age of 88.
A dedicated member of All Saints Church, Jericho, Ibadan, she was not only a staunch worshipper but also one of the oldest choristers in the church.
A statement signed by Mrs. Banji Sokoya confirmed the sad news:
“Goodnight, my ever so cherished mummy, boss, and mentor. We’ll surely see in the morning.”
Born on October 23, 1936, Chief Anike Agbaje-Williams (née Kuforiji) was a pioneer in African broadcasting. She made history as the first face to appear on television in Africa, making her debut on Western Nigerian Television (WNTV) on October 31, 1959. She also became the first voice on Africa’s first commercial radio station, WNBS, earning her the title “Double-First.”
Her career spanned decades, rising through the ranks to become a respected producer and director of programs before retiring in July 1986.
Her death is a great loss to the broadcasting industry, her family, and many Nigerians who admired her work. The family, in their statement, acknowledged that her impact extended far beyond Nigeria and that her remarkable contributions to media and society will never be forgotten.
“She lived a glorious, remarkable, and impactful life. The family would forever cherish the memories of her great love for broadcasting, her tremendous passion for life, and her deep faith in God.”
Chief Anike Agbaje-Williams was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose legacy will live on through those she inspired.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they mourn her passing. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
May her soul rest in perfect peace.
