Lebanon sends 70 military personnel back to Syria.

Lebanon has reportedly expelled around 70 Syrian officers and soldiers, sending them back to Syria after they illegally entered the country through informal routes.

This action comes in the wake of upheaval in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8.

Many senior Syrian officials and individuals associated with Assad’s ruling family sought refuge in Lebanon following the political changes in Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), based in London with sources in Syria, and a Lebanese security official confirmed the expulsion of Syrian military personnel of various ranks through Lebanon’s northern Arida crossing.

Upon their return to Syria, the individuals were reportedly detained by the new ruling authorities who are implementing a security crackdown on remnants of the Assad regime. The crackdown is said to be particularly focused on areas near the border with Lebanon, including cities and towns in Homs and Tartous provinces.

The Lebanese security official disclosed that the Syrian officers and soldiers were discovered in a truck in the northern coastal city of Jbeil during an inspection by local authorities. Requests for comments from Lebanese and Syrian government officials regarding the incident have not been immediately answered.

Earlier this month, Lebanese Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi mentioned that a top Assad adviser, Bouthaina Shaaban, had left Beirut after legally entering Lebanon. The recent expulsion of Syrian military personnel underscores the complex political dynamics and security challenges in the region.
