Láyípo Aso– Margret Oshinowo

As the world evolves, new creations tend to come into existence while ancient creations tend to go extinct. Láyípo Aso is not excluded from this growth.

Láyípo aso is a lightweight, ancient container made from steel, designed in a cylindrical shape with a lid to protect its contents. Traditionally, this container is used to pack clothes, serving as an alternative to a wardrobe or a travel box due to its portability and convenience.

In the past, láyípo aso held significant cultural importance. A bride without one was considered unprepared for marriage, similar to how leather boxes are viewed in the present age. Láyípo aso was a symbol of readiness and domestic preparedness, indicating a woman’s capability to manage her household.

Many older people today still possess these containers and see no need for modern, fashionable boxes. For them, the ancient container is more than just a storage item; it is a cherished relic from their past, often linked to significant life events such as their wedding preparations.

The sentimental value attached to these containers is immense, reflecting the deep cultural roots and personal histories of the owners.

Beyond its cultural significance, the container is also highly practical. Its steel construction protects clothes and valuables from termites and water damage.

This durability made it a reliable choice for safeguarding important items. Additionally, the container can be secured with locks, ensuring the safety of its contents from thieves or intruders. This blend of cultural and practical value has allowed láyípo aso to endure through generations.

Láyípo aso also made an appearance in popular culture movie Anikulapo, the character Rolake used one during her escape, showcasing its continued relevance and functionality in contemporary storytelling.

This ancient container remains a testament to Yoruba culture and history, reflecting the ingenuity and traditions of the past while still holding relevance today.
