Awka, Nigeria — Members of the Labour Party (LP) Caucus in the National Assembly have strongly condemned the brutal assault on a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elohor, in Anambra State, calling on authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The lawmakers made their position known on Thursday in a statement issued in Awka, the Anambra State capital, stressing that the incident—captured in a viral video showing operatives of the Anambra State vigilante group, Agunechemba, attacking the corps member—was “heinous, cruel, and criminal.”
“The recourse to jungle tactics, one of which led to the brazen assault on the corps member, was inhuman and barbaric and is hereby condemned in its entirety,” the lawmakers declared, warning that such acts must not be allowed to fester.
The statement, signed by Senator Victor Umeh, Senator Tony Nwoye, Ozodinobi George, Afam Ogene, Idu Emeka, Oby Orogbu, Uche Okonkwo, and Anekwe Peter, accused the state government of consistently turning a blind eye to the “impunity and lawlessness” of the Agunechemba group.
According to the lawmakers, the vigilante outfit has overstepped its bounds by arrogating to itself the functions of the Police and EFCC, even going as far as invading female corps members’ lodges under the guise of fighting crime.
They further alleged that the outfit was being used for political purposes, recalling its involvement in recent electoral disruptions.
Reiterating their demand for accountability, the Caucus urged the Nigeria Police to take over the investigation, insisting that the state government could not serve as an impartial arbiter in the matter.
“We demand an immediate and thorough probe. Those found culpable must be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent,” the lawmakers maintained, adding that in a functional society, the Agunechemba operatives would already be in police custody.
