Emeka Martins Chinedu, representing Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency in Imo State, has called for immediate and concerted efforts to address the severe erosion issues plaguing the Southeast region of Nigeria.
Chinedu, who sponsored a bill to establish the South East Erosion Control Commission, stressed the urgent need for deliberate measures to combat the erosion that has significantly impacted the environment and the livelihoods of local residents.
The proposed bill, which has successfully passed its first reading in the House of Representatives, aims to create a strategic framework for a long-term solution to the erosion crisis in the Southeast.
Chinedu explained that the commission would be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies to address the erosion problems that have devastated farmlands, homes, and infrastructure in the region.
The lawmaker underscored the importance of establishing an institutional framework capable of effectively managing and mitigating erosion, thereby protecting the environment and the livelihoods of affected communities.
Highlighting the extensive damage caused by erosion in southeastern Nigeria, Chinedu emphasized the necessity of a dedicated commission to address the issue. He noted that the bill reflects lawmakers’ commitment to tackling pressing environmental challenges and improving the quality of life for residents in the Southeast.
