Lawmaker Advocates for Equitable Healthcare Access in Nigeria

Senator Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, the Convener of the 10th National Assembly Joint Committees and the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage, has urged all legislators and health sector stakeholders to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for every Nigerian, irrespective of socio-economic status.

Speaking at the fifth Annual Legislative Summit on Health in Abuja, Senator Harry-Banigo emphasized the importance of legislative agendas that expand telemedicine infrastructure, ensure robust trade, and uphold rigorous regulatory standards to address healthcare disparities across the nation.

As the Chairman of the National Assembly Senate Committee on Health, Senator Harry-Banigo advocated for increased funding, effective policies, and sustainable partnerships to enhance transparency and achieve universal health coverage.

“All partners and stakeholders in the health sector should be guided by principles of accountability and transparency to achieve sustainable health programs in the country,” he stated.

Amobi Eugene, a Member of the House of Assembly and health sector stakeholder, criticized the 15% national budget allocation to health as insufficient and called on parliamentarians to demonstrate greater responsibility to their constituents and the country for a sustainable healthcare system.

Dr. Stanley Ukpai, Director of Projects at the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to finding solutions for universal health coverage. “This fifth installment is another opportunity to pause and reflect, and the dRPC is happy to be a partner to this prospect,” he said.

Other summit partners expressed their commitment to achieving universal health coverage and fostering a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system.

The Annual Legislative Health Summits, convened by the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage, aim to inform national and state legislators, as well as stakeholders, about the federal government’s new Health Sector Renewal Program. The theme, “Improving Legislative Stewardship and Accountability for Universal Health Coverage,” highlights how legislative functions can be harnessed to achieve the program’s objectives.

According to Nigeria Health Watch, the state of primary healthcare in Nigeria is poor due to decades of neglect by state and local governments, which are responsible for providing primary healthcare services. This neglect has resulted in inefficient and poor-quality primary healthcare delivery across the country.
