The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has intensified efforts to address the Lassa Fever outbreak that has claimed 190 lives in 2024.
During a media briefing in Abuja, NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, disclosed concerning figures: 9,492 suspected cases, 1,154 confirmed cases, and a fatality rate exceeding 13%. He identified high-burden states such as Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, Taraba, Benue, and Ebonyi as areas requiring urgent attention.
To combat the crisis, the NCDC has implemented several measures, including enhanced disease surveillance, distribution of medical supplies, and increased laboratory testing facilities from nine to 13. Additionally, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated to coordinate a One Health response.
“While progress has been made, the current situation calls for immediate and intensified interventions,” Dr. Idris emphasized.
The NCDC also urged citizens and healthcare workers to maintain strict hygiene and infection control practices, particularly during the festive season.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to curbing the outbreak and reducing its impact on affected communities.
