Abuja, Nigeria — Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has named ex-President Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s strongest candidate for the 2027 presidential election, urging party leaders to actively court his return.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Lamido said, “Jonathan is PDP’s best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” describing the former president as a seasoned leader with unmatched experience, governance skills, and collaborative ability.
Lamido argued that no current PDP figure from the South equals Jonathan’s political pedigree, stating, “He is competent, qualified, and most welcome. With all due respect to members, I see no better alternative if he comes back.”
He further stressed that if the presidency is zoned to the South, Jonathan remains the party’s most formidable contender. “Who in PDP now can challenge Jonathan in terms of leadership experience, openness, and partnership?” he asked.
The endorsement comes amid growing speculation about Jonathan’s possible PDP comeback. Although the former president—who has kept a low profile since his 2015 loss—has not declared his intentions, ongoing quiet lobbying within the party has kept him at the center of 2027 political calculations.
