Lagos Taskforce Cracks Down on Roadside Fuel Vendors

The Lagos State Taskforce has launched an operation to eliminate illegal roadside petrol sellers, particularly targeting the Mile 2 Oke area along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to address the environmental and security challenges posed by unauthorized vendors and the proliferation of makeshift structures in the area.

Under the leadership of the agency’s new Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, the crackdown aligns with the state’s THEMES PLUS agenda, which aims to improve environmental sustainability and public safety.

The taskforce’s operation was prompted by growing concerns about illegal roadside activities, which have caused severe traffic congestion, a rise in traffic-related robberies, and environmental degradation. The spread of shanties along the expressway has also created a hotspot for criminal activity, endangering the lives and property of commuters and motorists.

In response to directives from the Lagos State Government and the state’s Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, the taskforce moved swiftly to dismantle illegal structures and remove vendors operating by the roadside.

Chairman Akerele highlighted the dangers posed by the illegal sale of petrol and diesel, noting that over 2,000 litres of petroleum products were seized during the operation. He emphasized that selling fuel in such conditions creates serious fire hazards and threatens the safety of both vendors and road users.

“We are committed to eradicating these unsafe practices and ensuring the safety of all Lagos residents,” Akerele stated, adding that the taskforce will continue to monitor the area to prevent a resurgence of illegal activities and maintain clear roads for smooth transportation.

Residents and business owners in the Mile 2 area were urged to cooperate with authorities and adhere to the state’s environmental regulations to preserve the safety and serenity achieved through the operation.

During the raid, four suspects were arrested, and several items were confiscated, with Akerele confirming that the suspects will face prosecution while the seized items will be forfeited to the state government.
