Ikeja, Lagos — The Lagos State Government has announced a major milestone in its digital infrastructure drive, revealing that internet subscriptions in the state have surpassed one million, following the rollout of its 6,000km MetroFibre optic project.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, during a ministerial briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, to commemorate the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
Alake, while highlighting the ministry’s strategic responsibilities, noted that the ongoing efforts in science policy advancement, ICT governance, digital infrastructure, and smart initiatives are designed to place Lagos at the forefront of digital transformation.
“The MetroFibre initiative is not just about cables; it’s about laying the foundation for a truly connected and smart city. This infrastructure has enabled us to drive digital penetration, with subscriber numbers projected to exceed one million between 2024 and 2025,” the Commissioner stated.
Providing updates on data integration, Alake also revealed that the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) has successfully captured over 6.4 million residents, with 4 million adults and 2.4 million children already registered. The government aims to register 10 million more residents within two years, with a long-term goal of 20 million.
The Commissioner also noted that Lagos is deploying Intelligent Video Surveillance Systems in areas like Alapere and Bank Anthony Way. According to him, the smart surveillance technology is expected to enhance urban security, promote business confidence, and attract investment, ultimately boosting employment and the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR).
Touching on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the state’s tech framework, Alake emphasised the need for ethical and inclusive AI development. “We must ensure AI applications are secure, fair, and reflective of our diverse society,” he said.
Lagos State continues to position itself as a hub of digital innovation, combining technological advancement with inclusive governance to drive economic growth and public service delivery.
