Nigeria _ Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have vehemently condemned the invasion of the chamber by heavily armed men of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The lawmakers described the incident as an “assault on democracy” and an “embarrassment to democratic norms”.The DSS officials had blocked lawmakers’ access to the parliament ahead of the expected resumption of plenary, sparking tensions and resistance from the lawmakers, who were supported by police personnel, orderlies, and staff members.
The lawmakers took turns to condemn the invasion, stating that whoever is aggrieved by the new leadership of the House should approach the court for redress. They also called on the DSS to explain the reason for its invasion of the state legislature and urged the National Assembly to condemn the action. In a show of solidarity, the 36 lawmakers present at the plenary passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda. The House then adjourned sitting indefinitely, with DSS officials still blocking the entrance to the Speaker’s office.
