Lagos – A Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, has alleged receiving threats after her video criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration went viral. In the video posted on her TikTok account, #talktoraye, Uguamaye expressed frustration over Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, lamenting that hard work seems futile amid financial struggles.
She openly criticized President Tinubu, describing him as a “terrible leader” and questioning the government’s efforts to alleviate citizens’ suffering. Additionally, she complained about Lagos State’s poor living conditions, calling it a “smelling state.”
Shortly after the video gained traction, Uguamaye claimed she began receiving threats, reportedly from NYSC officials, pressuring her to take down the content. Frustrated by the backlash, she took to Instagram, stating that she was being targeted for merely voicing her concerns. She insisted that her criticism was not malicious but rather an expression of her right to free speech.
In a follow-up post, she revealed that NYSC officials had obtained her personal details and were persistently contacting her. She expressed fears for her safety, stating that the pressure to delete the video was an attempt to silence her and hide the reality of Nigeria’s economic struggles.
Her allegations have sparked widespread debate on social media, with many Nigerians questioning whether the NYSC is suppressing free speech among corps members. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly supported Uguamaye, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression and urging the government to listen to the concerns of its citizens.
Amnesty International has also condemned the alleged threats, calling on the NYSC to respect the fundamental rights of corps members. They stated that rather than silencing critics, the government should focus on addressing the economic challenges raised in Uguamaye’s video.
The controversy continues to trend online, with Nigerians divided on whether corps members should be allowed to openly criticize the government without repercussions. The NYSC is yet to officially respond to the allegations.
