Abuja , Nigeria:The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued a fresh warning of potential flash floods in several states across the country during the month of July, urging residents to take precautionary measures.
In its latest flood risk alert released on Monday, NIMET identified Sokoto, Lagos, Benue, and Edo among the states most likely to experience flash flooding due to increased rainfall and poor drainage conditions.
“Sokoto State is at high risk of flash flooding,” the report stated, noting that varying levels of risk also apply to Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
The agency advised residents in the affected areas to stay vigilant and adopt flood-prevention measures. These include clearing drainage systems, relocating from flood-prone zones, preparing emergency kits, switching off electricity and gas during flood events, and reinforcing homes against possible mudslides.
NIMET also emphasized the importance of public awareness and community preparedness to minimize loss of life and property as the rains intensify.
