Lagos Assembly Dismisses Allegations of Mass Defection to LP

Lagos, Nigeria —  The Lagos State House of Assembly has refuted claims that 27 of its members are planning to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party (LP), denouncing the report as false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public.

Assembly Labels Report as Baseless

In a statement signed by Hon. (Otunba) Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, the Assembly condemned the publication, describing it as inaccurate, divisive, and an attempt to sow confusion among Lagosians.

He clarified that the recent removal of former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and the election of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker were strictly internal legislative matters conducted within the framework of the Nigerian Constitution.

Legislators Reaffirm Loyalty to APC

The statement emphasized that the leadership change does not signal any intention to leave the ruling party, reaffirming that all lawmakers remain committed to APC’s governance agenda.

“Let there be no ambiguity, which no member of this Assembly is contemplating defection. We were elected under the leadership of the ruling party, which remains united and focused on fulfilling its mandate to the people of Lagos State,”  the statement read.

The Assembly further dismissed the claims as an attempt by agents of destabilization to create unnecessary tension and division within the legislature.

Reassuring party members and supporters, the statement urged Lagosians to disregard the misinformation, reiterating that the Assembly remains focused on governance and service delivery.

“Our commitment to the people and the party remains unwavering. We urge our supporters to stand firm and not be swayed by falsehoods,” the statement concluded.
