Labour Unions Give NERC Deadline to Roll Back Electricity Tariff Increase

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly issued a stern ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), demanding an immediate reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike to N65/kwh.

In an official statement released by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, the ultimatum requires NERC to comply by Sunday, May 12th, 2024.

The labour unions have explicitly warned that failure to heed their demand will result in a swift mobilization of members to occupy all NERC and Distribution Companies’ (DISCOs) offices nationwide until the issue is resolved to their satisfaction.

Emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding the rights of citizens against exploitation and injustice, the Organized Labour adamantly declares their refusal to accept the recent tariff adjustments as the new standard.

This ultimatum comes following the rejection of the electricity tariff hike from 65kwh to 225kwh by both labour centers, underscoring their determination to advocate for fair and equitable policies for all citizens.
