Business activities came to a halt at the head office of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, as organized labour staged a protest against the recent electricity tariff increase by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
As early as 6:30 a.m., workers gathered at the Yerwa Business office of the YEDC to voice their discontent over the heightened electricity charges.
Speaking to the protesters, Borno State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Yusuf Inuda, highlighted that the decision to picket NERC and Distribution Companies (DISCOs) stemmed from the central working committee’s dissatisfaction with the tariff increment. Inuda emphasized that the hike has inflicted undue hardship on Nigerian workers, demanding an immediate reversal.
“We have chosen to picket the YEDC office in Maiduguri as there is no NERC office here. This office represents the major DISCO office in the area. We are here to express our strong objection to the recent surge in electricity tariff,” Inuda stated.
State Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Baba Mohammed, affirmed that the labour unions in the state are fully adhering to the directives from national officers, ensuring a complete cessation of business activities at the company for the day. He decried the inability of workers to afford their electricity bills due to the steep increase, urging the federal government to intervene promptly.
“If NERC and DISCOs do not revert to the previous tariff, the Labour Unions will devise further strategies to address the issue,” Comrade Mohammed warned.
