The National Working Committee of the Labour Party has denounced the suspension of its national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, by the executives of Ward 3 in Arue-Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government, labeling it as fake.
The State Working Committee had supposedly ratified the suspension in Benin City on Friday, May 24, 2024. However, the National Working Committee of the party clarified on Saturday, May 25, 2024, that the national chairman had not been suspended by the Ward 3 executives.
In a statement signed by the national publicity secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, it was emphasized that the ward chairman, Thompson Ehiguese, did not possess the authority under the party’s constitution to remove or suspend a national chairman. Furthermore, Thompson Ehiguese himself, in a viral video, denied the purported suspension, affirming the ward leadership’s loyalty to the chairman and acknowledging their lack of power to take such an action.
According to Ifoh, the court ruling from the Court of Appeal in Benin Division on August 14, 2023, emphasized that the National Chairman of the Labour Party cannot be suspended or removed by the Ward executive, further reinforcing the invalidity of the attempted suspension. The party leadership is currently investigating the origin of the alleged suspension letter and will take appropriate disciplinary action against any party officer found to have violated party rules.
