Madrid, Spain — Real Madrid star forward Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalised after being diagnosed with an acute case of gastroenteritis, ruling him out of the Spanish club’s opening FIFA Club World Cup fixture.
The French captain, 26, was notably absent from training on Tuesday due to a fever and did not feature in Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on Wednesday night.
A statement issued by the club on Thursday confirmed that Mbappé had been admitted to hospital for medical evaluation and diagnostic tests after showing symptoms consistent with a gastrointestinal infection.
Gastroenteritis, commonly referred to as a stomach bug, typically involves inflammation of the gut and can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort. The club, however, has not provided a specific timeline for the forward’s return or confirmed his availability for their next match against Mexican side Pachuca, scheduled for Sunday evening.
Mbappé has had a standout debut season with Real Madrid since his high-profile free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. He netted an impressive 43 goals across 56 appearances in all competitions, quickly establishing himself as the focal point of Real’s attack.
This Club World Cup marks Real Madrid’s first major tournament under new manager Xabi Alonso, who took over from Carlo Ancelotti following the conclusion of the 2024/25 La Liga campaign. Despite the managerial transition, Real has already claimed silverware this season, lifting both the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup with Mbappé playing key roles in both triumphs.
His current illness casts a shadow over the club’s hopes heading into the later stages of the Club World Cup, with supporters and management alike hoping for a swift recovery from one of the world’s most electrifying talents.
