In the past year, the Kwara State Government has evacuated 158 beggars from the streets of Ilorin and returned them to their home states.
Mrs. Afolashade Opeyemi, the state’s Commissioner for Social Development, revealed this during a ministerial press briefing organized by the Ministry of Communications in Ilorin, the state capital, on Monday.
Mrs. Opeyemi stated that the evacuated beggars, primarily from Bauchi, Kano, and other northern states, had become a social menace in Ilorin and surrounding areas.
“We have evacuated 158 young beggars from the streets. Initially, 88 beggars were raided, followed by another 70. They have since been repatriated to their states,” Opeyemi said.
She further disclosed that dangerous items, including guns, daggers, charms, and other weapons, were found in the possession of the evacuated beggars.
She expressed concern over the beggars’ possession of such items, noting, “Our discovery confirms that criminals often hide their guns and other weapons with beggars.”
The Commissioner also mentioned that the state government treated and repatriated five mentally challenged individuals during the year.
Additionally, she noted that five mentally unstable individuals, who were causing disturbances in the metropolis, were treated at the psychiatric home in the Olorunda area of the state. After being certified mentally stable, they were sent back to Akwa-Ibom and Cross River, their home states.
