Ilorin, Nigeria — A witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has testified that former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, and his Finance Commissioner, Demola Banu, were not signatories to the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB) account.
The testimony was given by Dr. Musa Dasuki, a retired Permanent Secretary at KWSUBEB, during cross-examination at the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin. Dasuki clarified that while he served as a board member and accounting officer for the agency, neither Ahmed nor Banu had direct financial control over its accounts.
Addressing concerns about a N5.78 billion loan, Dasuki explained that the funds in question were not secured by the former governor or his commissioner. Instead, he stated that the loan was primarily used to pay workers’ salaries, countering allegations of misappropriation.
The EFCC had previously accused Ahmed and Banu of diverting Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grants between 2013 and 2019. However, both men pleaded not guilty, maintaining that they had no involvement in the alleged financial misconduct.
As the trial progresses, the court continues to review evidence to determine the validity of the charges.
