Lagos, Nigeria — The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, has dismissed what he termed “subtle agitations” over who will succeed him, insisting that neither church members nor outside voices can pressure him to step aside.
Speaking during a Bible study programme streamed online, Kumuyi directly addressed the matter, according to an August 7 report from Church Times Nigeria.
“Are you tired of me?” he asked, drawing a loud “Nooo” from the congregation.
The 83-year-old cleric took issue with remarks by a young preacher the previous week, who reportedly said twice that “there is no leadership without a successor.” Kumuyi described the statement as excessive, stressing that “God will give a successor at His own time.”
Citing biblical examples, he said leadership change is determined by divine will, not human pressure.
“You are not going to fight your shepherd, your pilot. I reject any member of the church… who tries to control me,” Kumuyi declared, adding, “I won’t even take that from my wife… I stand where I stand and nobody will put me under pressure.”
He urged members not to undermine his mission or convictions, warning that attempts to sway him would only strengthen his resolve. While acknowledging that a successor will eventually come, he maintained that it will be chosen “in the hands of God.”
“If God gives you a pastor still active at this age, with a good voice running everywhere to preach, and you ask for a successor, it makes me think you are tired of seeing me,” he said.
Kumuyi concluded that when the time is right, “God will choose a man after His own heart,” and cautioned against trying to hasten the process.
