San Antonio, Texas — American actor Jonathan Joss, widely recognized for his role in the animated series King of the Hill, has died following a fatal shooting incident in San Antonio.
The 59-year-old was killed on Sunday, June 1, 2025, during an altercation with his neighbor, identified as 56-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez. According to the San Antonio Police Department, Alvarez has been arrested and charged with murder.
In an official statement released on Monday, SAPD confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene on Dorsey Drive around 7 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Joss—legally named Jonathan Joss Gonzales—critically injured near the roadway. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by officers, he was pronounced dead by emergency medical services at the scene.
Although speculation has circulated online suggesting the incident may have been a hate crime, authorities stated that there is currently no evidence linking the shooting to Joss’s sexual orientation. “Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss’s murder was related to his sexual orientation,” SAPD posted via X.
However, Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, shared a different account on social media. He alleged that the shooting was motivated by homophobia and occurred at the site of their former residence. According to Kern de Gonzales, the couple had returned to check their mail and found the remains and harness of their late dog placed outside the home. This emotional discovery led them to cry out in distress.
He recounted that a man approached them, shouted homophobic slurs, and opened fire. “Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired, Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,” he wrote.
As the investigation continues, SAPD’s homicide unit is working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. No further details regarding the motive or background of the suspect have been released.
