Kick-start of African Music category at Grammys, God’s timing – Davido

Nigerian music sensation, Davido, acclaimed for his Grammy-nominated status, expressed gratitude for the inception of the Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys, deeming it as a manifestation of divine timing. In an exclusive interview with France 24, the artist reflected on the global emergence of African music and culture, asserting their enduring dominance, albeit now basking in an amplified global limelight.

When probed about the timeliness of the new Grammys category for African music, Davido emphatically attributed it to “God’s timing.” Acknowledging the longstanding influence of African music, he emphasized that recognition has been deserved for years, yet he remained optimistic about the unfolding acknowledgment, asserting that divine timing is unparalleled.

Responding to the host’s question regarding the timeliness of the Best African Music Performance category, Davido underscored, “African music has been dominant for years. So if you’re asking me if we should have gotten recognition since, yeah, definitely. But things take time. As I said, God’s timing is the best.”

Expressing his elation for the newly established category, Davido not only celebrated his personal connection but also applauded fellow nominees. He articulated, “It’s very beautiful given that people back home can make African music and win a Grammy. That’s really amazing to see. So I would say God’s timing, I wouldn’t say late.”
