Nairobi, Kenya — Celebrated African novelist, playwright, and academic, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, has died at the age of 87, his family confirmed on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
The announcement was made by his daughter, Wanjiku wa Ngugi, via a heartfelt message on Facebook. In her tribute, she wrote: “With profound sorrow, we share the news of our father, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s passing this Wednesday morning. He lived meaningfully, fought valiantly, and as he wished, we choose to honour his legacy by celebrating his life and enduring work. Rîa ratha na rîa thŭa. Tŭrî aira!”
Wanjiku added that the family’s official spokesperson, Nducu wa Ngugi, will provide details about the memorial arrangements and celebration of his life in due course.
Ngũgĩ, renowned for his unwavering advocacy for African languages and post-colonial literature, leaves behind a towering literary legacy. His influential works include Weep Not, Child, The River Between, A Grain of Wheat, Petals of Blood, and numerous critical essays that reshaped African literary thought.
