Kemi Badenoch’s Identity Remarks Ignite Heritage Debate

London, UK A public statement by UK opposition leader Kemi Badenoch distancing herself from Nigeria has sparked criticism from Nigerian-born Dutch entrepreneur Dr. Wiebe Boer, who described the move as “deeply problematic” and damaging to conversations about heritage and representation.

Boer, who was born and raised in Nigeria but holds Dutch citizenship, voiced his concerns in a Friday LinkedIn post, stating that Nigeria remains a core part of his identity wherever he works or lives. He contrasted his stance with Badenoch’s recent comments on the Rosebud podcast, where she disclosed that she had not renewed her Nigerian passport in over two decades and no longer identified as Nigerian — despite her parents’ roots and her early upbringing in the country.

“I claim Nigeria anywhere and everywhere — from boardrooms in Amsterdam to classrooms in Michigan,” Boer wrote, stressing that cultural identity should not be abandoned for political positioning. He argued that global leaders such as former US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have maintained ties to their ancestral heritage without it hindering their careers.

Citing examples of Nigerians’ contributions to British society, Boer listed prominent figures across sports, film, music, politics, literature, and business — from footballer Bukayo Saka and actor Chiwetel Ejiofor to boxer Anthony Joshua and author Ben Okri. He also highlighted Nigerian-led companies like Helios Investment Partners and GTBank, noting their significant role in the UK economy.

Boer emphasised that it is possible to criticise Nigeria without renouncing it, warning that Badenoch’s stance sends an unhelpful message. “Choosing to distance oneself from Nigeria isn’t neutral. It says something,” he wrote, adding, “I’ll always claim Nigeria. Every day, everywhere. Because it’s still shaping some of the best stories — and people — the UK and the world have to offer.”
