Kano Traders Urge FGs Support on Food Security

Kano, Nigeria  —  The Singer Market Development Association (SIMDA) has appealed to the Federal Government to provide enhanced support for farmers, particularly through the provision of improved seeds, to strengthen food security in Nigeria.

The appeal was made by SIMDA Chairman, Junaidu Zakari Mohammed, during a media briefing in Kano, where he emphasized the critical role of quality seeds in boosting agricultural productivity.

“Providing farmers with improved seeds will significantly enhance crop yield and contribute to stabilizing the nation’s food supply,” Mohammed stated.

Commending recent government interventions, he acknowledged the impact of waivers on essential food imports, including rice, pasta, and noodles, which have led to price reductions in local markets.

“We appreciate the Federal Government’s efforts in easing food import restrictions. This policy has positively affected market prices, reducing the financial burden on citizens,” he remarked.

Mohammed further urged authorities to sustain these waivers while fostering a competitive environment for local food processing industries, which he believes will enhance production and price stability.

Additionally, the SIMDA Chairman called for increased investment in agricultural development and security measures to ensure farmers can cultivate their lands without fear, ultimately contributing to national food sufficiency.

The statement concluded with a renewed call for collaborative efforts between the government and stakeholders to reinforce food security and economic stability.
