Kano Public Complaints Commission Arrests Permanent Secretary and Four Others in Drug Supply Scam

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested five individuals, including Alhaji Mohammed Kabawa, Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in connection with a multi-billion Naira drug supply scandal.

Public Relations Officer Kabiru I. Kabiru informed reporters in Kano that the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation. The detained individuals also include Abdullahi Bashir, Chairman of the state branch of the Association for Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and Chairman of Tarauni Local Government Area (LGA).

The suspects are alleged to have colluded in awarding a contract to Novomed Pharmaceuticals for drug supplies to 38 local government areas in the state, in breach of public procurement regulations.

Preliminary investigations have shown that each local government paid N9.1 million to Novomed for drug procurement, but the drugs were never delivered. Musa Garba Kwankwaso, Managing Director of Novomed and nephew of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, was also among those arrested.

Kabiru confirmed that all suspects are cooperating with the commission’s investigation. The commission continues to probe the extent of the alleged misconduct and aims to hold those responsible accountable.

As of the latest update, the suspects remain in the commission’s custody.
