Kano Government Ordered to Pay Emir Bayero N10m Compensation

A Federal High Court in Kano has mandated the Kano State Government to compensate the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, with N10 million for violating his fundamental human rights.

The court found that the Kano Governor’s order for the Emir’s arrest was unlawful, resulting in the Emir being placed under house arrest and infringing upon his rights to liberty and freedom of movement.

Justice Simon Amobeda, who delivered the judgment, issued a restraining order against the respondents, including the Attorney General of Kano State, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies, prohibiting them from arresting, detaining, or harassing the Emir.

The respondents in the case included the Attorney General of the Federation (1st respondent), Attorney General of Kano State (2nd), Nigeria Police Force (3rd), Inspector General of Police (4th), Commissioner of Police in Kano (5th), Department of State Services (6th), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (7th), Nigerian Army (8th), Nigerian Airforce (9th), and Nigerian Navy (10th).

The judgment specifically restrained the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th respondents from any further actions that could infringe upon the Emir’s fundamental rights, including arrest, detention, threats, intimidation, or harassment.

The court awarded N10 million in compensation to Emir Aminu Bayero for the breach of his rights.

Emir Aminu Bayero had filed the lawsuit seeking enforcement of his fundamental human rights following the Kano Governor’s order for his arrest. The ruling represents a significant victory for the Emir and sets a precedent for the protection of fundamental rights in Nigeria.
