Kano, Nigeria — The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has issued a strict warning to school teachers in the State, prohibiting them from forcing students in hard labour within or outside school premises.
The directive was disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa in which the state Governor emphasised that schools are meant for education and moral guidance, not manual labour.
During an unscheduled visit to the School for Arabic Studies in Kano, the governor was dismayed to find students digging a toilet pipeline.
Confronting the headmaster over the issue, the governor was told that the task was assigned to the students after school hours. However, the governor insisted that such practice must stop immediately.
To address infrastructure challenges, Yusuf assured the school management that his administration would renovate all dilapidated structures, including the school mosque. He also directed that any school projects be submitted to the Ministry of Education or his office for proper execution.
In a related development, the governor inspected ongoing reconstruction work at the Kano Printing Press, which was damaged during the #EndBadGovernance protests in 2024.
Expressing concern over the structural quality, he instructed the contractor to strictly adhere to approved standards.
