Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the upcoming United States presidential election.
The announcement coincides with Harris’s tour of key battleground states, beginning with a rally in Philadelphia later today, where she will officially introduce Walz.
Harris, the first woman and the first Black and South Asian individual to serve as vice president, considered a wide range of candidates in a swift vetting process following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his re-election bid on July 21.
Walz, 60, a former educator now serving his second term as Minnesota’s governor and chair of the Democratic Governors Association, has previously served 12 years in Congress. He represented a predominantly conservative rural district that has largely been Republican both before and after his tenure.
