Kaduna, Nigeria— Low voter participation marked the ongoing by-election for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, despite early arrival of election materials and presence of security personnel.
Reports from Narayi indicated that accreditation and voting began as early as 8:30am in some polling units, while others commenced closer to 9am. However, only a handful of voters were on ground in the early hours.
Our correspondents observed that although voting materials were intact and officials were present, residents trickled in slowly, keeping the atmosphere calm. Party agents and observers monitored the exercise closely, while stakeholders expressed optimism that more voters would turn out later in the day.
At the Primary School, Sabon Tasha, located in the Television area, voters were seen casting their ballots and returning home as queues remained short.
Meanwhile, business activities went on unhindered in Sabon Tasha, Television, and Romi markets, where shop owners took advantage of the situation to open for sales.
This occurred despite the restriction on vehicular movement announced by the Kaduna State Police Command across Chikun and three other local government areas. LEADERSHIP, however, reports that both human and vehicular movements persisted as no roadblocks were mounted by security operatives.
