K1 De Ultimate’s Airport Incident Reflects Culture of Impunity — Ex-TUC President

Abuja, NigeriaFormer President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Peter Esele, has criticised renowned Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, over his alleged misconduct at a Nigerian airport, describing the incident as a troubling reflection of disregard for the rule of law.

Esele expressed disappointment over the musician’s reported refusal to adhere to airport security protocols, stating that such behaviour is unbecoming of a public figure of his stature. He cautioned that public apologies should not be seen as substitutes for legal accountability.

“This is a metaphor for a nation where power exempts one from consequence,” Esele said, adding that lawlessness has broader implications than mere public embarrassment.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a video that circulated online captured the moment K1 appeared to block a commercial aircraft on the tarmac, preventing it from taxiing. The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over aviation security rules.

ValueJet Airlines stated that the musician was denied boarding on Flight VK 201 (Abuja–Lagos) after he allegedly insisted on bringing a flask containing more than 100ml of liquid — a violation of aviation safety regulations. Despite repeated instructions from security personnel, K1 was said to have refused compliance.

The aircraft’s captain, Oluranti Ogoyi, alleged that the musician opened the container and poured its contents on her and others.

Commenting further, Esele stressed that aviation laws are explicit on the prohibition of liquids over 100ml unless medically justified and declared. “Yet enforcement often yields to influence. In Nigeria, ‘Do you know who I am?’ is no longer a question, but a threat,” he said.

He linked the incident to a broader national issue of impunity, noting that from public officials abusing sirens to drivers ignoring pedestrian crossings, the rule of law is frequently undermined from the top down.
