JUSUN Strike Delays Natasha’s Defamation Case Hearing

Abuja, NigeriaThe ongoing industrial action by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has stalled legal proceedings involving suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The senator was expected to appear before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on Tuesday, but the strike action, which began on Monday, prevented the scheduled arraignment from taking place.

Confirming the development, her lead counsel, West Idahosa (SAN), noted the delay while reiterating that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan remains committed to complying with the court’s directives.

However, Idahosa had earlier expressed doubt about the federal government’s readiness to proceed with the case, despite its scheduling.

The case stems from criminal charges filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mohammed Abubakar, accusing Akpoti-Uduaghan of making defamatory remarks in both a televised interview and a private phone call.

According to the charges, which were filed on May 16, 2025, the senator allegedly claimed during an April 3 appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello conspired to assassinate her.

The charges also include allegations that, in a private conversation with Dr. Sandra Duru, the senator linked Akpabio to an organ trafficking operation involving the late Iniubong Umoren, supposedly for the benefit of his ailing spouse.

Akpabio, Bello, and four others have been named as key witnesses in the trial, which now faces delays due to the judiciary-wide strike.
