Abuja, Nigeria — The House of Representatives has confirmed the passing of its Deputy Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State.
She passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
The announcement was made by the House Spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., who described her death as a significant loss to the National Assembly and the nation.
“It is with great sadness that the House of Representatives announces the demise of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House. She passed away earlier today, January 15, 2025, following a brief illness,” Rotimi stated.
Born on December 2, 1965, Rep. Onanuga was a devoted public servant and an unwavering advocate for her constituents. Elected to the House in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly, where she championed initiatives to empower women and advance social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, she assumed the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly. According to Rotimi, she was known for her remarkable leadership, dedication to legislative discipline, and active participation during parliamentary proceedings.
She was Fondly called ‘Ijaya,’ Rep. Onanuga, 59, was celebrated for her intellect, humility, and commitment to excellence. “Her contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape showcased her passion for creating a better society and her dedication to public service,” Rotimi remarked.
The House extended its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State—particularly her constituents in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency and the entire National Assembly.
“As we grieve the loss of this vibrant and selfless lawmaker, who devoted her life to the betterment of Nigerians, her legacy of service and dedication will remain an enduring source of inspiration,” Rotimi added.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course. “May her soul rest in perfect peace, and may her memory continue to inspire future generations,” the statement concluded.
