GOMBE— Tragedy struck on Christmas Day in Gombe as a commercial bus lost control and rammed into a procession of Christian faithful, leaving 22 people injured. The procession was en route from Tumfure community to the Government House and Gombe Emir’s Palace for a Christmas homage when the incident occurred.
The accident happened around 2 p.m. near IMAN Restaurant on Bauchi Road. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, suspected to have suffered a brake failure, veered into the crowd, causing panic and chaos.
Mob Reaction and Police Response
Following the accident, an angry mob reportedly attacked the driver, who managed to escape the scene. However, his vehicle, which was loaded with rice and grains, was vandalized and set ablaze by the enraged crowd.
The Gombe State Police Command, through its spokesperson, Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the incident. He stated that all injured victims were promptly rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe and the Specialist Hospital for medical treatment.
Abdullahi also confirmed that no fatalities were recorded and assured the public that an investigation has been launched. The Commissioner of Police has directed the Command’s Motor Traffic Department (MTD) to conduct a thorough probe into the accident.
Calm Restored as Authorities Step In
A combined team of police officers, soldiers, and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel secured the area to prevent further escalation. Leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in collaboration with law enforcement have worked to restore calm among residents.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s Sympathy
Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed his condolences to the victims and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Speaking at the Government House, he sympathized with those affected and assured them of the government’s support.
The governor also announced that the state government would cover the medical expenses of all injured victims, underscoring his commitment to their recovery.
Investigation Underway
As the police continue their investigation, the public has been urged to remain calm and avoid actions that could further disrupt peace during the festive season. Authorities assured residents that steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
