Justice Juan Merchan of a New York court has delayed the sentencing of Donald Trump to September 18, following a motion by Trump’s lawyers to contest his conviction.
Initially, Trump was set to be sentenced on July 11. However, Justice Merchan announced on Tuesday that he would rule on the motions by September 6. Should sentencing be deemed necessary, it will occur on September 18.
This delay follows a Supreme Court decision granting former presidents partial immunity for official acts performed during their tenure. Trump’s legal team contends that this immunity applies to his case, which involves hush money payments to an adult film star during the 2016 election.
Despite this argument, prosecutors and legal experts believe the challenge is unlikely to succeed, as the accusations appear to involve non-official actions.
According to the BBC, this sentencing postponement is the latest development in one of four criminal cases against Trump, who was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in May.
