Abuja, Nigeria — Renowned journalist Ike Abonyi has vehemently denied claims by human rights activist Deji Adeyanju that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi offered him money for support.
Abonyi, who brokered and attended the three-hour meeting between Adeyanju and Obi ahead of the elections, said no such offer was made.
In a statement Friday, Abonyi expressed shock at Adeyanju’s recent allegations, describing them as untruthful and misleading.
He recalled advising Adeyanju privately in 2022 against making baseless accusations, which Adeyanju ignored despite multiple attempts to engage.
Abonyi stressed that Obi never promised or gave him money and that Adeyanju’s decision to withdraw support should not be based on falsehoods.
He also reminded that Adeyanju had once encouraged Obi’s presidential bid and was free to change his stance but must uphold the truth.
