Jigawa state, Nigeria–The Jigawa State Government has unveiled two major empowerment programmes valued at over ₦392 million, targeting members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Butchers Association. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen grassroots economic development and support key trade-based sectors.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the Dutse Sports Complex, Governor Umar Namadi described the intervention as a deliberate, people-focused effort to uplift vital contributors to the state’s economy.
“These two associations are not only essential to their members but to the socio-economic stability of the state as a whole,” Governor Namadi stated. “Supporting them is an investment in the development and prosperity of our people.”
Under the first phase of the scheme, 36 commercial vehicles valued at ₦279.3 million—including insurance—were handed over to selected NURTW members as part of a revolving loan initiative administered by the Jigawa State Youth Economic Empowerment and Employment Agency.
Governor Namadi commended the union’s leadership for their commitment to improving members’ livelihoods and urged them to ensure effective oversight of the vehicles. He also emphasized the role of NURTW in sustaining the state’s supply chain networks across agriculture, commerce, and industry.
“The NURTW is a critical component of every functioning value chain,” the governor noted. “Our ongoing investments in transport infrastructure—over ₦100 billion committed to completing 26 inherited road projects—reflect our commitment to improving mobility and economic access.”
Highlighting future plans, the governor announced the establishment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion centers across Jigawa as part of a shift toward cleaner, cost-effective energy solutions. “This is a strategic move to support NURTW members and other transport operators with more sustainable energy options,” he said.
In the second phase of the programme, Governor Namadi launched a ₦113 million revolving loan scheme for the Jigawa Butchers Association to support livestock dealers and strengthen the meat production value chain. The initiative will benefit 53 individuals, with 15 major dealers receiving ₦5 million each and 38 others receiving ₦1 million each.
“We believe this programme will not only improve the livelihoods of those directly involved but also have a ripple effect across the livestock and meat sectors in Jigawa,” the governor stated.
Looking ahead, he revealed plans to institutionalize long-term support for the sector through strategic policy initiatives currently in development.
