Jigawa court hands down death sentences to two individuals.

In a significant legal development, the Jigawa State High Court in Birnin Kudu has handed down a death sentence to two individuals who were found guilty of conspiring to kill Yakubu Ibrahim and dumping his lifeless body by the roadside.

The two suspects were brought before the court on charges of conspiring to rob the victim of his phone, money, and car after committing the heinous act.

The crime was reported to have taken place on August 30, 2021, along the Kano-Maiduguri Road at the Kantoga roadside in the Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The prosecution presented four witnesses and four exhibits during the trial, convincingly demonstrating the guilt of the accused beyond any reasonable doubt.

Subsequently, the presiding judge, Justice Musa Ubale, pronounced the convicts guilty on all three counts levied against them. Accordingly, they were each sentenced to life imprisonment for criminal conspiracy.

Additionally, they were handed a 21-year prison term without the possibility of a fine for the robbery charge. The court, however, issued a death sentence by hanging for the final count in accordance with sections 97(1), 298(1)(a), and 221(b) of the Penal Code.

The convicts have been granted a three-month window to exercise their right to appeal the court’s decision.
