In preparation for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a directive to all Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre owners across Nigeria to detain any parent discovered within proximity of their facilities during the examination period.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Isaq Oloyede, conveyed this instruction during a virtual meeting with CBT centre proprietors on Wednesday. The upcoming UTME, slated to be conducted in over 700 CBT centres nationwide, prompted this measure as part of the board’s efforts to ensure the integrity of the examination process.
Dr. Fabian Benjamin, spokesperson for JAMB, emphasized the necessity of this action in light of past incidents involving intrusive parental intervention during the board’s examinations. Instances of parents facilitating exam irregularities or causing disruptions during previous exercises underscored the need for stringent enforcement measures.
According to a statement released by JAMB, security personnel will collaborate closely with CBT centre owners to maintain order and facilitate a smooth examination process. The statement also highlights concerns about parents escorting their wards to examination venues, potentially compromising the integrity of the examinations.
In adherence to the national education policy, which stipulates a minimum age requirement of 17 years for UTME candidates, the board emphasizes the importance of candidates progressing through the educational system as defined in official documents. Parents circumventing this process by accompanying their underage wards to examination centres pose a threat to the integrity of the examination process and are subject to enforcement actions by JAMB and law enforcement agencies.
