Israeli forces have penetrated Gaza’s largest hospital in what the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) describes as a “concentrated assault”.
According to eyewitness reports, commando forces entered the main emergency department and went from room to room questioning people, but there is presently no shooting in the hospital area.
Israel accuses Hamas of operating a command center in tunnels beneath the hospital, and the US claims to have intelligence to back up the accusation.
Hamas, whose political wing governs the Gaza Strip, denies this, claiming that the hospital raid was a war crime in which hundreds of civilians were sheltering with patients.
The Hamas-run health ministry says more than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza.
“People and patients must be safeguarded, and we do not want to see a firefight in a hospital,” a statement from the US White House said.
Following Hamas’s October 7 strikes in southern Israel, the IDF began the bombardment of Gaza.
