Jerusalem, Israel — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Friday that the Israeli cabinet is set to finalize a deal with Hamas, paving the way for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza continued unabated, with Palestinian authorities reporting at least 86 fatalities on Thursday, a day after the truce was initially revealed.
Disagreements among Israeli ministers delayed discussions on Thursday, with the cabinet initially expected to vote on the agreement. The postponement was attributed to Hamas, according to Israeli officials.
However, on Friday, Netanyahu’s office stated that approval was imminent, with a restricted security cabinet meeting scheduled ahead of a full cabinet session to ratify the deal.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been informed by the negotiating team that an agreement has been reached for the release of the hostages,” read the statement from his office.
It remains unclear whether the full cabinet will convene on Friday or Saturday to finalize the deal or if any delays will affect the planned ceasefire, initially expected to commence on Sunday.
Typically, a 24-hour window is provided for Supreme Court appeals, and the full cabinet usually refrains from meeting until Saturday evening, following the conclusion of the Jewish Sabbath.
This procedural timeline suggests that the start of the ceasefire could be postponed.
