Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations Escalate in Cairo

Efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the release of hostages intensified as talks resumed in Cairo yesterday.

Hamas stated that its delegation approached the negotiations with a positive outlook after reviewing the latest ceasefire proposal, expressing determination to reach an agreement that meets the Palestinians’ demands.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that accepting the ceasefire should be straightforward for the militant group.

Hamas negotiators returned to Cairo to continue discussions, facilitated by Egypt and Qatar, aimed at temporarily halting Israel’s offensive in Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages.

Hamas indicated a desire to refine the current agreement, indicating remaining areas of disagreement between the parties.

The primary issue revolves around whether the ceasefire would be permanent or temporary. Hamas insists on a commitment to end the conflict, while Israel is hesitant as long as Hamas remains active in Gaza. Discussions reportedly involve a 40-day cessation of hostilities while hostages are freed, along with the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Despite ongoing talks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated the possibility of a new military ground operation in Rafah, even if a deal is reached.

The US, Israel’s key diplomatic and military ally, is cautious about endorsing a new offensive that could result in civilian casualties and seeks assurances for the protection of displaced Palestinians in Rafah.

Minister Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s war cabinet, emphasized the need for an official response to the proposed outline before further deliberation.

According to sources familiar with the matter, CIA Director Williams Burns has traveled to Cairo to assist in facilitating the latest negotiations.
