Iranian President Seeks Allies During Qatar Visit Following Tensions with Israel

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday for bilateral discussions and a regional summit, aiming to rally Asian nations to counter what he described as “Israeli crimes” in the Middle East.

This marks Pezeshkian’s first official visit to Qatar as president. During the trip, he condemned Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, for which Iran holds Israel responsible. Haniyeh was killed on July 31, though Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement.

In addition, Israeli forces recently targeted Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iran-supported Hezbollah group in Lebanon, in an operation that extended into southern Lebanon. Iran responded with a missile strike on Israel on Tuesday.

“We seek security and peace, but Israel escalated the situation with the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran,” Pezeshkian told Iran’s Student News Network upon his arrival in Qatar.

He also criticized Western powers, stating, “Europe and the U.S. suggested peace in Gaza within a week, but instead, they escalated their actions.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing conflicts with both Hamas and Hezbollah, warned of retaliation following Iran’s missile strike.

“If the Zionist regime continues its crimes, they will face stronger responses,” Pezeshkian warned before departing for Qatar, according to Iranian state media.

During his visit, Pezeshkian’s primary objective is to strengthen ties with Qatar through agreements, while his secondary goal is to discuss how Asian nations can help curb Israeli actions and bring stability to the Middle East. He is also scheduled to participate in the Asia Cooperation Dialogue, where regional security is expected to be a key focus.

Meanwhile, Qatar has been involved in mediating ceasefire efforts in Gaza, though talks remain stalled.
