Iran Launches Missile Barrage on Israeli Cities Amid Escalating Conflict

Tensions in the Middle East escalated dramatically on Tuesday as Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles at multiple locations across Israel, including the capital, Tel Aviv.

While Israel’s Iron Dome defense system intercepted several of the missiles, reports indicate that many still hit densely populated areas.

In an official statement, the Israeli military confirmed the assault, stating, “A short while ago, missiles were launched from Iran towards Israel.” The attack triggered air raid sirens across major cities, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, with loud explosions reported as Israel’s air defense systems lit up the night sky, intercepting numerous incoming missiles.

The missile strike comes in response to the recent assassinations of key figures, including Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, and an Iranian military commander, according to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps. Tehran warned that more strikes would follow if further aggression against Iran occurred.

The barrage follows an Israeli ground invasion of southern Lebanon just a day earlier, targeting Hezbollah, a militant group with close ties to Iran. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched missiles at Israeli sites, including the Glilot base near Tel Aviv, home to the headquarters of Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency.

In Washington, U.S. officials expressed firm support for Israel. A senior White House official warned that any direct attack on Israel would result in “severe consequences for Iran.” President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris convened urgent meetings with national security teams, discussing U.S. assistance to Israel and measures to protect American personnel in the region. Thousands of additional U.S. troops are being mobilized to the Middle East to reinforce the 40,000 soldiers already stationed there.

The situation remains tense, with Israel calling up additional reserve brigades to bolster its northern defenses and conducting airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, raising the risk of a broader regional conflict.

The missile strikes follow the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike over the weekend, an event that has sparked widespread reactions and heightened threats of retaliation from Iran.
