A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Iran’s northeastern city of Kashmar on Tuesday, resulting in at least four fatalities and 120 injuries.
Kashmar’s Governor, Hajatollah Shariatmadari, reported the casualty figures on state television, noting that the earthquake occurred at 1:24 PM local time (0954 GMT). He stated that 35 of the injured have been hospitalized. The quake primarily affected older buildings in both urban and rural areas.
Footage broadcast by state television depicted first responders working amidst the rubble of collapsed buildings. The United States Geological Survey indicated that the earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles).
